The lithograph "Hombre Que Le Gustan Las Mujeres" (The Man Who Likes Women) is based on a painting of the same name. In a 1977 oral history interview with Dr. Jacinto Quirarte for the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art, the artist explains that the piece, drawn entirely from memory rather than a photograph, reflects his artistic intent.
Martinez remembered a large mechanic from his neighborhood whose image “lingered in my mind as potential subject matter.” However, the work felt incomplete until he added tattoos to the man’s chest and arms, featuring “the good girl, the bad girl, and the [virgin].” He said, “So, there’s a range there. This guy had range.”
