Armadillo is part of the Series Animal de mi Tiempo. The ‘animals’ of the Peruvian artist Cecilia Paredes draw on and articulate an interior experience. Her body takes on the form of a fabulous animal. For Cecilia Paredes, it is the marginal beings that she loves most. Animals that are often misunderstood. Loners.
The armadillo is so named because the Aztec word for armadillo meant turtle-rabbit. The species name novemcinctus refers to the nine movable bands on the middle portion of their shell or carapace. Their common name, armadillo, is derived from a Spanish word meaning “little armored one.”
