Yvette Mayorga

Yvette Mayorga is a Chicago-based multidisciplinary artist whose vibrant and provocative work challenges societal norms and explores social issues related to identity, culture, and consumerism. Themaximalist aesthetic presented in her work is rooted in personal narrative and familial histories, examining the Mexican American and Latinx experience in the United States.Mayorga’s use of bakery-grade piping bags to apply bubblegum pink acrylics on varying-shaped canvases was inspired by the “confectionary labor” performed by her mother when she worked as a baker after immigrating to the U.S. Her practice is also influenced by Rococo-inspired elements: lavish trimmings, gilded scrollwork, and architectural ornament. Subverting notions of femininity as delicate and frivolous, the color pink is the artist’sweapon to lure viewers into the issues close to her heart. The artist's work comments on the false notion of theAmerican Dream and the aesthetics of girlhood, leaving viewers with a new perspective on the power behindthe color pink. In 2024, Mayorga was featured in the group exhibition Something Beautiful: Reframing La Colección at El Museo del Barrio in New York, NY. Mayorga’s work has been recently acquired by major museums and institutions, such as the City of Chicago's permanent public art collection, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and El Museo del Barrio.
