Frank Romero's focus on developing an individual style was initiated by his enrollment at the Angeles State College (now California State University Los Angeles) in 1959. After years of intermittent studies, he graduated in 2011 and was honored as Distinguished Alumni of the Year, over 50 years after beginning his education. Romero’s early graphite pieces from the 1970s draw inspiration from Pablo Picasso and Rico Le Brun’s mixed media experiments on the organic human form. As seen in Untitled (Black Drawings), the artist pulls from personal references and familiar images to craft a lively scene in graphite composed of fragmented imagery of human anatomy.
