When discussing her decision to use bamboo imagery in her work, Datchuk explained, “Bamboo is a plant that can almost be invasive as it can grow in many different climates. It can also grow and adapt to its surroundings. I see that as a metaphor for how women keep swerving around challenging situations while still trying to thrive in those environments. We are helping each other, and we continue to find life and nurture one another.” The “bamboo” handcuffs can be interpreted as a testament of a commitment that we make with a vital friend, sibling, or significant other.
