The title Exodus is a reference to the migration of people throughout recorded history.
Raised Catholic, Armendariz uses the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden to highlight the forced movement of people from their place of origin. He personifies animals in his work similar to the way animals are represented in classical art. Roman and Greek mythology, as well as Per-Columbian and Meso-American art, is full of representations of gods and goddesses taking the form of animals. In this woodblock print, animals are fleeing an unseen danger, taking with them knowledge as represented by the burning stick in the mouth of the coyote, a re-mixing of the Promethean myth.
