The Reluctant Leader refers to the concept that “a good leader is a reluctant leader." Armendariz has collected stories over the years of individuals, typically through a twist of fate, who are called to lead. Roman and Greek mythology and pre-Columbian and Meso-American art are full of representations of gods and goddesses taking the form of animals. Animals are fleeing an unseen danger, taking with them knowledge, as represented by the burning stick in the mouth of the coyote. Coyote is a Modern Prometheus who has stolen knowledge and is, for better or worse, unable to return that knowledge.
