Cesar A. Martínez’s "Bato and Pachuco" series draws on various visual sources, such as obituary photos from local newspapers, high school yearbook photos, and media coverage. “Though based on real individuals, calculated liberties are taken with visual facts to 'universalize' a character and make him so recognizable that it prompts an ‘I know him!' response from the viewer. Through this approach, I can explore a range of human attitudes in a somewhat clinical context and possibly offer a more accurate visual portrayal than popular culture can provide. I know I am finished with a particular piece when I feel that the character has taken on a life of its own,” says Martínez.
