Martínez was involved in a handful of Chicano art collectives during the late 60s and 70s. The first being Con Safo, an artist association that advocated for destroying stereotypes, synthesizing a Chicano's hybrid identity. The second was Los Quemados, a small group of artists who disagreed with the idea that by creating Chicano art, one had to be outright political. In 1975, the newly created group sent an invitation titled: “Artistas Chicanos: Los Quemados: June 20th through July 13th, 1975,” which consisted of information about their inaugural reception and exhibition, as well as an overview of their ideologies. “We, Los Quemados, are not interested in creating a dogmatic art by insisting that arte Chicano should be only this or that. We must expand perceptions through art rather than limiting them.” - International Center for the Arts of the Americas | The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
