While growing up, Martínez spent much time on his family’s ranch, Los Garzas, in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon. It was there he found a love for the outdoors. His connection with ranching and trips to the Plaza de Toros in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, deepened his regard for bullfighting. “It's also a culture unto itself, and it has its music, way of talking, and even way of walking. I took up training with Novilleros in Nuevo Laredo; we would go to bull breeding ranches and practice with real fighting animals, not bulls but young females. This passion made me conscious of another culture.”
