One of Almaraz’s many artistic collaborations was with Luis Valdez and the Teatro Campesino, a theater troupe originally established as a wing of the United Farm Workers Union that used the art form to catalyze awareness of Chicana/o identity and contemporary social issues. "Night Theater" expands on these experiences by embracing the stage as a site for reimaging the everyday. In a nocturnal scene brightly illuminated by artificial city lights, Almaraz constructs a performance characterized both by violence and eroticism, chaos and order. In front of a backdrop with smoke-spewing volcanoes and a burning city, figures variously traverse the wooden stage: on horseback, with an umbrella, on all fours, wearing a bunny mask. Around them sit neatly organized symbols of everyday life, including a small pyramid, a chair, rings, and a floor lamp. Resisting any strict or singular interpretation, Almaraz blurs the lines between theatrical fiction and tangible reality, instead prompting a more poetic interpretation.
