Characterized by the de la Torre brothers’ distinct sense of humor, Poison Dart Frog possesses a spirited energy. Within its resin base, toy ducks, dice, and frog toys are nestled together, enveloped by a decal featuring Japanese mahjong tiles. The artwork’s name is a nod to Central American tree frogs, whose venomous skin was traditionally used by Indigenous Americans to tip blowdarts. Rising above the creature is a floral vulva that mirrors the mandorla of the Virgin of Guadalupe, acting as a powerful emblem of both faith and fertility. By weaving these components together, the artists highlight their deep ties to Mexican culture, transforming the frog and religious iconography into a whimsical, symbolic arrangement.
