In "Free Falling Flag," artist Jimenez Underwood explores the intricate complexities of a physical geopolitical border, demonstrating how nations can be divided yet remain inextricably connected. The artwork showcases woven interpretations of the United States and Mexican flags, symbols that are frequently reproduced on paraphernalia worldwide. In this piece, these flags are joined by a string of safety pins—a recurring element in the artist’s oeuvre that serves here as a symbolic tether between Mexico and the United States. Positioned below the safety pins is another flag, featuring a white background and a brown circle of barbed wire, which serves as a frequent motif. Reflecting the perspective of living in the borderlands, Underwood observes that "flags become similar, blurred, often both nations seem the same," capturing the nuanced reality of the frontier.
