'The Cartwheel Galaxy was identified several years ago as one of the farthest from Earth. Its odd shape, color, and strong presence demanded a woven depiction of this galactic wonder....
"The Cartwheel Galaxy was identified several years ago as one of the farthest from Earth. Its
odd shape, color, and strong presence demanded a woven depiction of this galactic wonder. I
wove a portrait of the Cartwheel Galaxy in five panels. The panels evoke the traditional
Mexican rebozo. Rebozos remind us of women’s power. The five panels hang together like sisters, with safety pins that connect the panels tenuously. I use the same materials for each panel: wire, linen, cotton, raffia, and metallic threads. When I think of my hand with five fingers that are all different but equally important. The density was eight wires per inch. It's a combination of tapestry and plain weave on a floor loom." - Consuelo Jimenez Underwood
