Ling Datchuk is the granddaughter of factory workers. Her Irish American grandmother worked on an assembly line at a car factory, while her Chinese grandmother worked in a sewing factory deep in Chinatown for an American retailer. Regarding her megaphone sculptures, Datchuk explains, "I was taught early on to 'eat bitterness'—a Chinese saying about enduring hardships silently, obeying, and remaining submissive. Despite feelings of empowerment or efforts to reclaim agency, women still face choices shaped by narratives they didn't create. Deep in my DNA and through muscle memory from the assembly line, I carry my grandmother's hopes and share how their labor helped build what was once stamped 'Made in America.'"
