According to the artist, this work was one of the first paintings he made that incorporated objects onto the surfaces of his paintings. "The object here is a paint can lid referencing paint used to paint walls rather than fine art paint used for paintings. It’s a nod to Jackson Pollock, who used house paint, and also a nod to Robert Ryman’s white paintings. I initially adhered the paint can lid to the canvas surface, then removed it, leaving a trace of where it had been “placed” before I "replaced” it. It’s this process that makes the painting, rather than just using paint to create the image. The look references modernism, but the surface is scuffed and marred—a kind of imperfect interpretation of modernism. This is probably the painting that led to my return to painting."
