"This small bust of the now-deceased Communist Party leader of China was from the 1970s. I realized this could have been displayed in the home of my family during the time they lived in China. Mao is credited for opening China to the West and boosting it's economy and power to the world but he is also responsible for the massive genocide of Chinese people, destruction of culture, and is considered one of the architects of the one child policy. This policy has created a irreversible population imbalance and has perpetuated the cultural beliefs that boys are more valued over girls. In this piece I alter his iconic image and give him hairstyles of young girls. I aim to take his power away and give presence to young girls because there is saying in China that goes 'girls hold up half the sky'" - Jennifer Ling Datchuk
