At the beginning of his career, Marin worked primarily in clay but then began working with bronze using the lost wax method. Although the head in this piece is made of bronze, its texture emulates work in clay and suggests remnants or fragments of ancient monuments to unknown heroes. By deliberating and leaving some surfaces ‘unworked,’ Marin adds tension to the faces and further emphasizes their emotional state.
Marín was born in Mexico in 1962 and studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plasticas of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in Mexico City. He represented Mexico at the 50th Venice Biennale.
