Ernesto Yerena Montejano's art is deeply influenced by his cross-national upbringing in El Centro, CA, a farming town bordering Mexicali, BC, MX. His work reflects the perspectives and interactions of Mexican communities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, often sharing narratives of identity conflicts akin to those experienced by many Chicanos in these areas. While identifying as Chicano, Yerena also maintains a strong connection to his Native/Indigenous heritage, which frequently appears in his art.

Through his brazen imagery, Yerena addresses political concerns by depicting cultural icons, rebels, and everyday individuals taking a stand against oppression. His art serves as a form of solidarity with his community, expressing frustration with oppression and advocating for dignity and rights.

Yerena is a recognized activist and organizer. In 2008, he founded the Hecho Con Ganas publishing project, producing politically and socially conscious images as limited-edition silkscreen prints. He is also the founder and curator of the Alto Arizona Art campaign (2010) and a founding member of the We Are Human campaign (2009). Yerena has collaborated on many thought-provoking projects with notable figures, including Shepard Fairey, Zack de la Rocha, Manu Chao, Ana Tijoux, Chuck D, Philip Lumbang, Jaque Fragua, Diane Ovalle, and Mochilla.
