Trained as a painter, engraver, and sculptor, Mexican modern artist Federico Cantú (1907-1989) followed an academic approach unlike other artists of the Mexican Art School. He combined the historical and religious themes of his work with Greek mythology, as seen in "Sirena." In 1945, he started working in drypoint technique with renowned master engraver Carlos Alvarado Lang. "Sirena" was created before the end of the 1940s.
