César A. Martínez offers us his perspective on reimagining cultural context through art and expression, and on reinforcing pride in the Chicano Movement, which was otherwise a renaissance for Mexican-American people who felt their culture was erased from the context of political and social agendas. Martinez often uses Spanish slang to accentuate the personality of each individual in his work, and challenges the viewer with expressionless, full-frontal faces in a photographic pose inspired by the likes of Richard Avedon's work. Here, "La Tortuga" shows us just that, curiosity and pride, and representing itself for the viewer.
