The Bato is one of Martínez’s primary subject matter, which, in his own words, has “become a staple, almost like a genre, within the series.” For Martínez, the bato represents what he considered “ultra-cool” as a teenager. “This cool bato con sunglasses character is very generic, mysterious, and idealized, but despite all the ones I’ve done, this character remains an enigma, challenging and elusive.” says the artist.
