In 2005, La Casa Azul (The Blue House), Frida Kahlo’s private home in Mexico City, was reopened as a museum 50 years after the Mexican painter’s death. Iturbide was commissioned by the Blue House to photograph Kahlo’s personal objects previously unseen by the general public, including corsets, crutches, and makeup. For three days, she photographed intimate objects in Kahlo’s bathroom that highlight Kahlo’s pain and strength. Iturbide provides a silent reflection of the life and legacy left behind. The series serves as a robust dialogue between Kahlo and Iturbide, exploring the iconic artist’s most intimate space and objects.
