In the Flight series, Paredes engages with Peru’s long history of arte plumario (featherwork) through sculptural objects resembling both paintings and garments. With strong roots in pre-Hispanic indigenous spirituality, arte plumario evokes an interrelation between the human and animal worlds, emphasizing the importance of metamorphosis and shapeshifting in connecting with the spiritual realm. Paredes’s invocation of this practice asserts the importance and persistence of indigenous Andean culture in the face of the brutalizing eradication efforts of various colonial enterprises. Further, Paredes suggests that one may find a broader notion of self in these practices: one that embraces multiplicity, transformation, and self-determination.
