During the 1980s and 90s, Romero spent extensive time in Arroyo Seco in Taos, New Mexico. The region’s diverse cultural landscape inspired the artist’s affinity for collecting the Southwestern textiles that would serve as the backdrop of still-life paintings such as Pistola y Calavera. Rendered in the artist’s painterly style, a patterned fabric is placed underneath a pistol, a ranch hat, and a human skull, evoking a sense of the Southwest that is influenced by American image culture and Hollywood (paraphrased from Barrientos Martínez).
