The material itself takes center stage, as her studio process often begins with a question: “Who wants to say the message?” She chooses specific flowers, official state flowers that grow along the U.S.-Mexico border, to highlight the randomness of a geopolitical boundary, pondering, “Will they need documentation?” Jimenez Underwood also plays with words and sounds through her titles, and Kaut is intended to evoke the word “caught.” This piece conveys a layered message, questioning borders while reminding us that beauty and vitality persist even amid division.
