Cecilia Paredes Peruvian, b. 1950

Paredes stands behind a veil of botanical illustrations. The archaic blends together as superimposed images of European architecture, such as Roman capitals, botany images, and the work of Italian naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi, are juxtaposed. Like Aldrovandi, Paredes indicates that she, too, is an acute observer of the natural world. She frames all of this, the woman from within. She raises her arms to her temples, gazing straightforwardly at the viewer as if saying she can see this evolving world at once. As if caught in a moment of time, as if lingering in a timelapse, one moving throughout history.
