César A. Martínez brings us his perspective of reimagining context of a culture through art and expression, and enforcing pride in the Chicano Movement that was otherwise a renaissance for Mexican-American people who felt their culture was erased from context of political and social agendas. Martinez often uses Spanish slang to accentuate the personality of each individual in his work, and challenges the viewer with expressionless full frontal faces in a photographic pose inspired by the likes of Richard Avedon's work. Here, "La Tortuga" shows us just that, curiosity and pride and representing itself for the viewer.
