"In Lady Painter, the image is a version of the Flaying of Marsyas by Titian, which for a long time I thought of as a theater of justice and questions about authority and punishment, particularly public punishment. The public punishment is reenacted in painting. Many times art historical images end up marking a field of reference, in this case the emotionally affected relationships that I am interested in and the question of the importance of pressure and touch, like how the difference between a finger and a knife is sharpness and material and a stab and caress is a question of measurement and intent." - Gaby Collins-Fernandez
