Like many artists Kati and her contemporaries at times struggled with being classified as Surrealists. Art historian Whitney Chadwick notes, "Often the women settled the problem of their relationship to the movement by establishing subgroups of friends to whom they turned for friendship and support, creating mini-networks of close bonds within the larger group, and defining their relationship to Surrealism in terms of friendship and personal affinities." Painter Leonora Carrington, a close personal friend and collaborator who drew from Surrealist and Renaissance influences, echoed the same sentiment. In 1960, as a birthday gift to Leonora Carrington, Horna made her portrait collage by integrating the reproduction of a Renaissance portrait and a photograph she had taken of Carrington in 1943. The results suggest a noblewoman of fine bearing, looking inwardly.
