From stereotypes of Mexican identity to current socio-economic and art world commentary, Alejandro Diaz’s text-based works use language as a form of social critique and resistance. Diaz’s work relies on text’s ability to conjure mental images and questions the divisions between high and low art. Drawing on various cultural allusions, Diaz captures complex social and political relationships within his multimedia work, as seen in From the Series of Great Prints (2019-2020), a series of archival color prints on German etching paper. Incorporating bright colors and obscured font, From the Series of Great Prints: Jerry Garcia (2019-2020) references the deceased Grateful Dead singer through the use of a well-known political slogan, humorously emphasizing the juxtaposition between the values of Jerry Garcia and Donald Trump.
