The Pachuco Series focuses on the Contemporary Chicano culture that Martinez experienced growing up in Laredo, Texas, and serves as a constant source of interest for the artist. Martinez’s portraits are anchored uniquely within the history of portraiture, making a place for themselves somewhere in between the mugshot, the street portrait, and the self-portrait. Constructing a new visual identity that is universally recognizable within Chicano culture but has been long excluded from the canon of Western portraiture, Martinez iconifies the archetypal figures that make up the Latinx population in the United States.
