Datchuk’s Flawless series features white porcelain face masks mounted on blue, pink, or gold mirrors. Each mask is imprinted with a unique pattern of flora and fauna motifs: a peony garden, a koi pond, fluttering birds or butterflies alighting upon blossoming flowers. The artist was inspired by the popularity of sheet masks, a popular self-care Asian beauty routine that promises hydrated, smooth, and bright skin. “It is full of desire for something other than you have. I hope when you look in the mirror every day that you see the beauty and power you inherited from your ancestors. So many times, I wished to see something other than my own reflection because I thought I needed to follow a standard. I hope you all know that you are Flawless just the way you are.” - Jennifer Ling Datchuk
