“Pinta algo bonito….” Martínez has said that his first renditions of Serapes were partly his response to pleas from family, friends, and acquaintances to “paint something pretty.” Meanwhile, his primary focus was on the Bato/Pachuco series, but the Serapes continued as a more vibrant exploration of color and design harmony within the cultural landscape. This transitional period of work for Martínez proved to be gravitational, as he was still defining his style in his other Chicano-focused series in the 1970s.
