The cactus is often depicted and revered in Chicano and Latin American art as a symbol of the sprawling, arid landscapes of the South and as a metaphor of their resilient peoples. While not as thorny or abrasive as the thick succulent, Romero’s nopal silhouettes are defined by cartoon-like forms and the artist’s signature exuberant acrylic painting style.
