As stated by Barrientos Martínez, “During his time at California State University, Los Angeles, Frank Romero became lifelong friends with Carlos Almaraz, a founding member of the Los Four collective. Almaraz and Romero practiced visual art in close proximity and later developed the political angle to their work as the Chicano Civil Rights movement or El Movimiento during the 1960s and 1970s became a point of resonance for them as Chicanos growing up in the visual aesthetic and political unrest of Los Angeles.”
