"Highway Esperanza" features the "Pride of Barbados" and "Esperanza" flowers, which are native to South Texas and often found on roadsides and highway routes throughout the state. Sanchez reimagines the plants by placing them in an elevated, refined still life painting reminiscent of the works of Dutch Old Masters.
Sanchez paints realistic still-lifes of seemingly mundane subjects. With these paintings, she uplifts her cultural heritage and chronicles her upbringing in San Antonio, Texas. Sanchez captures pockets of time and the emotional complexity that accompanies each juncture. “Each of my paintings represents snapshots into moments and recurring themes in my life that tell a larger story about geography and culture.”
