The figurines and idols showcased in Sánchez’s paintings convey the artist’s longstanding interest in altars, shrines, and retablos —a prominent theme explored in her work. Taking from the centuries-old tradition of vanitas still life painting, Ms. Kittie’s Still Life depicts statuettes of a saint, a calf, and a bull surrounding a mobile phone, reintroducing these figures into the lens of contemporary art.
