Trained as a painter, engraver, and sculptor, Mexican modern artist Federico Cantú (1907-1989) followed an academic approach, unlike many other artists of the Mexican Art School. He integrated historical and religious themes with Greek mythology, as seen in Sirena. In 1945, he began working in the drypoint technique with renowned master engraver Carlos Alvarado Lang. Sirena was created in the late 1940s.
