A highly personal, solitary, and peaceful tone pervades this photograph. Childhood is often a focus in Prieto’s work, and this photo captures a quieter moment: a child fishing alone on a calm lake with bright blue water. Prieto, born in Spain, is one of the most perceptive and prestigious photographers in Europe. As a trained mathematician, he applies his skills to carefully frame the landscape and the subject of his work. A neorealist approach gives Prieto’s work a lived-in quality, highlighting genuine moments of beauty in the everyday. He won the National Photography Prize in 2015.
