Ismael Vargas: Echoes of Mexico
Ruiz-Healy Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by Ismael Vargas. Echoes of Mexico opens Thursday, October 15th.
Born in Jalisco, Mexico, Ismael Vargas is a self-taught painter associated with the NeoMexicanidad movement; he employs objects of the Mexican culture in repetition and subtle abstraction to fill brilliantly colored canvases of objects from everyday life.
Ismael Vargas’s works are a play of shapes and edges, pure quantities precisely rendered with a highly refined painterly craft. He takes intimately familiar pieces of the Mexican world and turns them into stories that can strike the viewer as elements of a profound human epic. The exhibit is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue and an essay written by John Philip Santos.
Vargas’ work has been included in numerous exhibitions throughout Mexico and the United States. Among a few are the Americas Society of New York; Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City; Mexican Cultural Institute, Washington, D.C.; The Tamaulipas Contemporary Art Museum, Mexico; and the San Antonio Museum of Art, TX; His art can be found in the permanent collections of the Princeton University Art Museum, Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, CA; the Monterrey Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO), Mexico; and the Panama Museum of Contemporary Art, Panama.
