Growing up in Laredo, Pachucos (zoot-suiter types), batos (guys, “dudes”), and rucas (girls) were part of the artist's everyday life. The title of the drawing, La Chata, is a term used as an affectionate nickname in Latin America. In devising the composition, Martínez will often take one person's nose or mouth and combine it with someone else's face, creating fictitious portraits with a number of different hybrid features.
