Andrés Ferrandis: Numinous
Andrés Ferrandis is known for his evocative abstract paintings redolent with the traces of perception, what the artist calls “footprints left behind.” His new constructions of collage on paper utilize photography, fragments of text, and cut-paper organic and geometric forms that seem to drift and swirl through landscapes of memory.
Ferrandis’ collages are true descendants of the pioneering works by Kurt Schwitters a century ago. This is not just image-play within the picture plane; a tumultuous array of paper lifts above the embracing background in rich bas-relief. Are these images or objects? The tension between the three dimensional world and our reception of it through sight is a recurring question throughout this series. That the text snippets reference, among others, the existentialist concerns of Søren Kierkegaard is not an accident.
Ferrandis’ first exhibitions were accompanied by Bancaixa awards from Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno and Fundacion Bancaja Valencia, followed by travels in Cuba, New York, and Madrid. A resident of Miami since 2002, he has shared his time between Florida and Costa Rica for much of the past decade. Numinous is Ferrandis’ first solo exhibition at Ruiz-Healy Art.
Numinous (adj.) describing an experience that makes you fearful yet excited and fascinated, awed yet attracted-the powerful, personal feeling of being overwhelmed and truly inspired.
