Since the beginning of the 21st century, artists who work with thread and fabrics have made a name for themselves in the world of contemporary art. They are present at major international events and fairs are dedicated to them throughout the American continent, in Europe as well as in Asia. The book evokes a number of artists who have taken up this medium since the end of the 19th century in an innovative and unique way and paints a portrait of creators who have chosen it to accompany their political, economic, social or ecological approach. It shows that textile art remains subversive: it erases the boundaries between fine arts, applied arts and design, between tradition and modernity. It highlights “peripheral” identities and cultures. By questioning the categories of “feminine” and “masculine”, it blurs genders and undermines conventions.
