“Diaz creates art that occupies an interstitial space where his purity of inspiration is complemented by his purity of action. Nothing is wasted or disregarded. It is in this vein that his paintings evoke great poetry, but also come across like casual conversations. He redefines crude by refining the ordinary into art. He paints images that are beautiful and psychologically powerful; the tonality, the iconography, the contrasts, the stillness- all united in service to Alejandro’s artistic intention.” — Jimmy LeFlore

Alejandro DiazA Calm but Divided Sea, 2025Oil on canvas18 x 24 in
45.7 x 61 cmA Calm, but Divided Sea showcases Diaz’s approach to painting as a meditative and poetic act. Jimmy LeFlore suggests that Diaz's works are "meditations that leave monotony and verbiage behind." The emphasis on geometric shapes and gestural mark-making invites viewers to look beyond the painting’s veneer of tranquility and consider what, perhaps, lies in its depths.

Sun Worshippers and Moon Worshippers depict abstracted devotional scenes, featuring an ambiguous but considered landscape. Across various cultures, the sun and moon serve as a powerful symbol of honor and adoration, producing myths and folklore that have been passed down through generations. Diaz honors this reciprocity through a composition in which celestial bodies and worshipper, sky and land, are interconnected and mutually constitutive.

Alejandro DiazUntitled (for Goya), 2025Oil on canvas14 x 11 in
27.9 x 35.6 cmThe exhibition highlights the external influences on the artist, who states, “If I’m working on a painting, the subject matter will usually dictate which artists I will reference or loosely borrow from, with each painting ending up stylistically different from the next.” Appropriated from the painter Francisco Goya, Untitled (for Goya) emphasizes themes of isolation and vulnerability through a lone dog while also remaining true to his exploration of inner dialogue.

Diaz utilizes texture as a crucial element to convey movement and depth throughout these varied compositions. The depiction of furniture and walls is characterized by short, expressive brushstrokes. Diaz, a passionate history lover, also turns to fashion and interior design for inspiration, stating, "fashion, interior decor, painting, pottery, it's the history of mankind."

"His images are not simple, but rendered gently with a poeticvoice. His painting is free, but not childlike. These paintings are meditations that leave monotonyand verbiage behind. All of these paintings have so much to say in a visual atmosphere depicting absolute silence. So, what I see in Alejandro’s paintings is an art that emerges as inspiration, creation, and existence - becoming inseparable." — Jimmy le flore
