Empty chairs at an empty table hold the lingering presence of their owners. Shipton described how the table's placement, set up as if it were still in use despite being outside, stood out. Invitingly posed, "Welcome" frames the table and chairs as personified, as if they themselves are a family at dinner we have stumbled across in the public realm of the street.
