Carlos Amorales Mexican, b. 1970

Amorales studied in Amsterdam, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (1996-97), and at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (1992–95). He has completed residencies with Atelier Calder, Saché, France (2012); Mac/Val, Val-de-Marne, France (2011); and the Smithsonian Artists Research Fellowship, Washington, D.C. (2010). He lives and works in Mexico City. 

 

The artist practice encompasses animation, drawing, installation, video, and performance; he also collaborates with professional animators, composers, designers, musicians—and even wrestlers. Having matured under the influence of both Mexican and European cultures, Amorales frequently explores the commonalities and disparities of the two milieus by juxtaposing their distinctive vocabularies. His work is also deeply personal—reflective of emotional introversion and at times obscure, it journeys into a dark world of fantasy, blurring the line between the real and the imagined.

 

Amorales has had solo exhibitions at MUAC- Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, Ciudad de México, México (2018); Turku Art Museum, Finland (2016); Turner Contemporary, Margate, UK (2015); Philadelphia Museum of Art, United States (2014); Museo Tamayo, Mexico City (2013); Palazzo Delle Esposizioni, Rome (2010).

 

Carlos Amorales represented Mexico at the 57th Venice Biennial with the project Life in the Folds (2017). His work has been part other biennials such as the 10th Shanghai Biennale, China (2015); 2 and 8 Berlin Biennial (2001 and 2014); Sharjah Biennial 11, United Arab Emirates (2013); The 12th and 10th Biennial de la Habana, La Havana, Cuba (2015 and 2009).
