In White Fence, East LA (Cristina and mural), Cristina stands before a mural of Christ inscribed “Dedicated to Ronnie Lanes / Dwayne M. Walker.” With her back turned, she rests her arms on the wall, revealing a tattoo of praying hands and the words “In memory of Emma.” Her body becomes a site of remembrance, echoing the mural’s devotion. The mural itself is located at the Estrada Courts in Boyle Heights—a low-income housing project built during the World War II housing shortage, where many of the murals were created at the height of the Chicano movement. Within this context, Iturbide’s photograph layers personal and collective memory: through overlapping memorials—inked skin and painted wall—Cristina inhabits a space where faith, grief, and identity converge. Iturbide transforms the act of posing into a quiet ritual of continuity, a testimony to the sacredness of loss within the community.
