At their own request, the Seri women painted Iturbide’s face as they did their own—a sign of her acceptance into the community. Iturbide did not seek to exoticize or mimic the practice. This self-portrait marks her own self-interrogation and integration with her role as a photographer in the indigenous community.

Literature
"Her eyes reflect a challenge which, we recognise, mirrors the look on the faces of the Series. Her posture and expression might be interpreted as a declaration of the principles outlined above in connection with the Wenders' interpretation of the image: not only does she photograph what captures her attention, but, to some extent, "is" what she photographs." Graciela Iturbide, Eyes to Fly With, Portraits, Self Portraits and other Photographs, The University of Texas Press, (127)"What does inhere in the work is an ability to contain contradictions, to be both an outside observer of her subject's way of life and an empathetic participant in it at the same time…Iturbide's photography is neither strictly anthropological nor solely personal, but both at once…It celebrates ambiguity, which is what art does." "Graciela Iturbide: On the Shadow Line" by Marta Daho in "Graciela Iturbide", Fundacion Mapfre Exhibition Book (245)
"Suspended in Time: The photography of Graciela Iturbide" by Colin Westerbeck in the Hasselblad award book 2008 (124)
