Celia Alvarez Munoz speaking on when she met Mel and asked to photograph him for her series, Semejantes Personajes/Significant Personages.
“Mel’s name echoes in my grad halls. There was a lot of influence that Mel had left at Texas Western College, which is now UTEP…I would hear Mel this and Mel that, so I wanted to know who this Mel was, and I met him through another artist, John Hernandez, who really liked his work out of the sixties, when his work was extremely political. To quote Mel, “all art is political.”
So I asked him, he looked at me, and kind of stood back, and then when I told him I had heard his name, you know, it was kind of a holy spirit there, and then he agreed, and the rest was all very simple. All I did was make an appointment, and I was a roaming photographer, which frees you up.”
14:56 - 15:36
I had a great time with Mel; we caught up after all these years, and I was very fortunate to catch…there are six represented here that have already passed away, there’s Mel, there's Adan..”
